Summer Camp Teaching Aide (Temporary Part-Time)

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Camp Teaching Aide assists with the delivery of educational, science-based, and interactive curriculum to children ages 5-15. Session content areas may include but are not limited to astronomy, aeronautics, engineering, physics, marine science, paleontology, chemistry, human health, and biology. The Camp Teaching Aide will report directly to the Camp Coordinator. Each Camp Teaching Aide will be assigned to work with a particular Camp Instructor each week. The following is the required time commitment for the position.

  • Up to 29 hours per week
  • Hours are typically between 8:00 am – 5:30 pm
  • Shifts are broken into an AM and PM shift. AM shift hours are typically between 8:00 am – 1:30 pm. PM shift hours are typically between 12:00 – 5:30 pm.
  • Availability for all nine weeks of Summer Camp running from June 10th- August 9th. There will be no camp on June 19th and July 4th.
  • Availability to start June 6th for training and camp preparations.

 

SALARY: $14 per hour, Temporary PT

 

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist Camp Instructors in the delivery of interactive, science-based camp classes.  Classes may include but are not limited to astronomy, aeronautics, engineering, physics, marine science, paleontology, chemistry, human health, and biology. Classes may be indoors and/or outdoors.
  • Work with children aged 5-15 years old in a museum-based, hands-on environment.
  • Assist with the general supervision of the class, including classroom and behavior management.
  • Participate in all classroom activities and projects daily, as directed by the Camp Instructor.
  • Prepare and organize supplies.
  • Assist in maintaining the classroom and other museum spaces used during camp, ensuring a safe and clean environment at all times.  This includes set up for activities/experiments before morning and afternoon activities, keeping tables and chairs organized, and clean-up of supplies and materials at the end of each activity and the end of the day.
  • Assist during morning drop-offs (only AM shift), camper’s lunch time and recess, and afternoon pick-ups (only PM shift).
  • Assist with supervision of camp participants during after care (only PM shift).
  • Dresses appropriately in the Frost Science uniform, including a provided Frost Science polo, solid-colored pants or long shorts (no jeans), and comfortable, slip-resistant closed-toe shoes.
  • Aids with the distribution and collection of camp evaluations.
  • Teaching Aides must attend orientation and training to review class curricula and museum guidelines before camp commences.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

 

MINIMUM JOB/EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • At least 16 years of age
  • An interest in science and the desire to work with children in a camp setting
  • Some experience working with elementary or middle-school aged children

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrate leadership qualities, sound judgment, and taking initiative
  • Punctual, enthusiastic, mature, and flexible
  • Must follow museum’s established policies and safety regulations
  • Good knowledge of educational methods and/or a comfort with a variety of science topics together with the ability to have fun and participate in interactive and engaging activities in the class
  • Must exhibit an energetic and positive attitude at all times, and be fully prepared to engage students in activities for the entire duration of the class on a daily basis
  • Proficiency in another language is a plus, but not required

 

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:

  • Work generally involves moving around the museum, frequent use of stairs with potential for light lifting.
  • Work is performed both indoors and outdoors.
  • This position requires working with tools and chemicals using appropriate personal protective equipment.

 

SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Level 2 background clearance as defined by the Florida Statutes/law.
  • Drug screening as part of the Drug Free Workplace Program.
